Do’s and Don’ts

Do…

  • Reduce sun exposure
  • Choose shade whenever available
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily
  • Cover up with clothing, including broad-brimmed hats
  • Wear UV protective sunglasses
  • Avoid tanning, and never use UV tanning beds
  • Keep newborns out of the sun
  • Always apply sunscreen on children over six months of age
  • If staying outdoors, remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating
  • Examine yourself from head to toe every month
  • Recognize the ABCDEs of moles and melanoma
  • Visit an ASDS dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam

Don’t…

  • Ignore new or changing spots on your body
  • Forget those often missed places when applying sunscreen (ears, scalp, lips, behind your knees)
  • Be fooled by a cloudy day – the sun’s harmful UV rays penetrate through clouds and thick fogs
  • Forego a professional medical evaluation
  • Be afraid to ask questions – voice any concerns you have to your dermatologist
