Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment that improves the skin’s appearance and overall quality. The treatment involves puncturing the surface of the skin with thin needles, which triggers your body’s healing response.

During the healing process, your body sends collagen and elastin to repair the damage. These proteins keep your skin tight, firm, and hydrated. As you age, you produce lower quantities of collagen and elastin. Triggering their production helps improve the appearance of many skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Dull skin
  • Brown spots
  • Skin laxity
  • Redness

Microneedling promotes brighter, smoother skin without surgery or extensive downtime.

Are there different types of microneedling?

Limmer Dermatology offers multiple types of microneedling. In addition to traditional collagen induction therapy, the team performs the following:

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling

RF microneedling combines the traditional treatment with radiofrequency energy to penetrate deep into the dermal tissues for dramatic results.

Microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Your dermatologist can also combine microneedling with PRP, a substance in your blood that contains healing growth factors. The team draws your blood, spins it through a centrifuge to isolate the PRP, and applies it to your face after microneedling. You can also incorporate RF microneedling into this treatment.

How do I prepare for microneedling?

Microneedling requires minimal preparation, but there are a few steps you can take to ensure a comfortable experience and optimal results. It’s important to avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least 24 hours before your procedure. When you do go outside, make sure to apply sunscreen with SPF 50+ regularly.

Avoid using certain products, like retinoids and glycolic acid, immediately before and after microneedling to minimize irritation.

How long until I see results from microneedling?

Most people notice visible improvements in the tone and texture of their skin within four to six weeks of microneedling. While a single session can generate noticeable improvements, many people need about three to six treatments to achieve long-lasting results.
